The advance has stalled. Mud, wire, and open ground stretch ahead — and somewhere behind a broken wall or shell crater, the machine gun crew goes to work. These are the men who held the line and broke the charge, the backbone of German infantry tactics across every theatre of the Second World War from the bocage of Normandy to the frozen steppes of the Eastern Front.
Sculpted by Eskice Miniatures, this HMG Panzergrenadier firing group captures two soldiers in a tightly coordinated prone position. The gunner is pressed low behind a bipod-mounted machine gun — modelled with strong detail across the receiver, barrel, and bipod legs — his eye forward and his body flat to the earth. His loader or spotter lies close alongside, full kit on his back, head raised just enough to observe the field. Both figures wear the characteristic Stahlhelm steel helmet and carry accurate WWII German field equipment including rolled bedrolls, ammunition pouches, canteens, and full infantry packs. The sculpt rewards close painting — the fabric folds, strap work, and facial detail hold well at all available scales.
This set is well suited to building a heavy weapons section for WWII tabletop wargaming, creating a dug-in defensive diorama, or anchoring a display piece depicting German infantry in a suppressing fire role. The prone format integrates naturally into trench, ruin, and hedgerow terrain across multiple 28mm and 15mm compatible rule sets.
- You are pushing through a bombed-out village when a sustained burst pins your squad in the open. Can your flanking team reach the crew before they traverse and cut the advance?
- You are defending a road junction in winter. The HMG team is your last asset. Deploy them wisely — ammunition is limited and reinforcements are hours away.
- You are building a hasty ambush position along a forest track. The machine gun goes prone in the ditch. Will the crew hold long enough for the assault group to close?
